Low Fat Ice Creams

Today whenever you see anything labeled as low fat and no fat products, you may take a run to purchase them without understanding whether you are actually consuming the low fat low sugar product or just being cheated about it??

One such product is our very own childhood obsession, the Ice Cream.. Growing up, we all have ice cream memories, but now we are too conscious of eating them, owing to the growing health awareness!! So alot of companies have taken out the low fat varieties of ice creams!!
But are they really low fat?

Here are a few guidelines as given by the FSSAI, following which a company may label it's ice creams as low fat Ice creams.

1. Whenever you see an ice-cream, make sure you read the label. The ingredients list is the first thing which will give you the information about what ingredient is used in what concentration.
The first ingredient is used in the maximum concentration, while the rest follow in the descending order...

2. Secondly, read the nutritional information! Specifically, since you are looking for low fat ice cream, look at the fat content.

Normal ice cream - not less than 10%

Medium fat ice cream - less than 10% but more than 2.5%

Low fat one cream - not more than 2.5%

3. Thirdly, don't forget to look at the serving size, and then the amount of nutrition. For example, the serving size of the ice cream could be 84g and the nutritional values mentioned per serving. In this case, if the amount of fat present is 2.5g, you may assume it's 2.5% since the nutritional values are usually giver per 100g. So in reality,  the concentration of fat maybe 2.97%!!

This may look just a little up and down, and the common Indian mentality 'itna toh chalta hi hai' kind of a thing, but consider eating a little extra each day, and how much extra you will accumulate over time!!

Also, if the consumer is aware of what he is eating, and if he does not comply to the manufacturer's myths, only then will Indian foods be valued for what they are. Where we lack behind is, in being aware, and standing up for what is wrong.

If I don't eat the wrong food, the manufacturer is bound to either stop producing it or produce it in a right way for me to consume it.

Health is in your hands. Not in the hands of the food industry. It will make what you want. And now it is up-to you, on how strongly can YOU change the Indian lifestyle patterns.
